Lviv State Medical University was founded in 1784 under the authority of Joseph II, then Emperor of Austro-Hungary. Current academic staff includes 88 professors, 294 associate professors and about 400 assistant professors, who teach more then 4,400 students. The University library is linked with the Internet and Medline. Other local libraries provide current medical information and literature. Student facilities include dormitory accommodations, refreshment and entertainment services. The Faculty of Medicine provides a 6 year curriculum for becoming a physician with the opportunity to gain Doctor of Medicine degree. The Faculty of Dentistry is a 5 year learning curriculum, leading to the degree of Doctor of Dentistry.
The Faculty of Pharmacy is a 5 year program of studies (regular, as well as distance learning) with the opportunity to gain Master of Pharmacy degree. The Faculty of Nursing is a 4 year curriculum leading to Bachelor of Nursing degree. After completing their educational programs, postgraduate students have an opportunity to continue their clinical specialization (residency) and research projects during 3-6 years of postgraduate training and obtain the Medical, Dental or Pharmaceutical specialties or Ph.D. degree, under the guidance of experienced professors.
