Established in 1900, Odessa State Medical University is a state owned university with partial autonomy. This institution is recognized/listed by the World Health Organization, International Association of Universities, European University Association, Medical councils of almost all major countries, including India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Bangladesh & others.

Five Faculties are available namely Medical, Dental/Stomatological, Pharmaceutical, Pre university studies, Post graduate studies. The university has a Teaching staff of 800 highly qualified teachers. Medium of study available are Russian/English/French.

OSMU is the first university of Ukraine which started medical education in English. There are approximately 4500 students among which are approximately 1200 foreign students from 52 various countries. Foreign students have been studying since 1946.

Well equipped labs/clinics/polyclinics/hospitals/research centers are a clinical base for training. It has a library with a total stock of 1 million books. The complex has Six Hostels, Sport Complex, Students' Club/cultural and scientific societies, Students' Recreation Centre (located on the coast of Black Sea).
